A myriad of marked trails wind along lakes and lead through pastures, ancient woodlands and rolling terrain. And you can of course walk where you please. Just remember to follow the principles of “Allemansrätt”. Tourist offices can provide you with maps and can recommend both easier and tougher trails.
Crawl in a cave, behold old grave fields, find a look-out point. With a little luck you’ll encounter an elk or deer or stumble upon a magical lake and hear the melancholy song of the black-throated loon echo between the hills. The Troll Stone outside Tranås, is great place to go for families. Experience Viking deeds at Rök Runestone, or Rökstenen, which has the world’s longest runic inscription.
RIDE A BIKE
Enjoy cycling on quiet dirt or asphalt roads. Come here and train on the country roads. Or get your adrenaline going with the thrill of mountain biking in the vast wilderness. If you don’t have your own bike, the tourist offices know where you can rent one. They’ll also give you maps and helpful tips about suitable routes. Sommen Runt is a classic 124 km cycle race, where you cycle round Lake Sommen at your own pace.
TRANÅS GOLF COURSE
An easily walked park and woodland course with fairly even ground, situated by Svartån River and Lake Sommen. The golf restaurant is famous for being something special. The publication Svensk Golf (Swedish Golf) gave it 6 pegs out of 5 (!). There is a shop where PGA professional Karl Ragneby will equip you well for your round of golf. If you don’t have a handicap but want to try golf, there is 9-hole short course.
There are two green areas in central Tranås, perfect for leisurely strolls; Ekmarkspark with its well-kept gardens and Östanå Park a.k.a. ”Tranås Green Lung”. Ekbergspark, located just outside the town centre, is a luscious forest area with lots of beautiful, old oak trees. Hedners Park has hiking trails, a nature playground and as well as a ”fairytail-trail”. Picnic areas with barbecue facilities are available in several places.
